Moralistic supernatural punishment is probably not associated with social complexity

چکیده
Evolutionary theories of religion frequently assume that the presence moralizing gods is positively associated with social complexity. An influential source evidence for this assumption comes from researchers using Standard Cross-Cultural Sample’s high variable as a proxy measure their outcome interest (the gods). In paper, we critically assess common are complex societies. We first discuss god variable’s coding criteria, which defined by whether or not creator director universe, regardless power omniscience. then show these relevant to question about moralistic punitive, has led underestimate systematically producing false negatives – inferring truly present absent because absent. use datasets include both and risk more among lower levels As also show, likely leads spurious positive association between complexity gods. briefly ethnographic data historical biases might have strengthened association. therefore widely assumed morally punitive complexity, conclude supports prevalence small-scale

Audience Effects on Moralistic Punishment
Punishment has been proposed as being central to two distinctively human phenomena: cooperation in groups and morality. Here we investigate moralistic punishment, a behavior designed to inflict costs on another individual in response to a perceived moral violation. There is currently no consensus on which evolutionary model best accounts for this phenomenon in humans. Models that turn on indivi...
متن کاملBroad supernatural punishment but not moralizing high gods precede the evolution of political complexity in Austronesia.
Supernatural belief presents an explanatory challenge to evolutionary theorists-it is both costly and prevalent. One influential functional explanation claims that the imagined threat of supernatural punishment can suppress selfishness and enhance cooperation. Specifically, morally concerned supreme deities or 'moralizing high gods' have been argued to reduce free-riding in large social groups,...
متن کاملStratification and supernatural punishment: cooperation or obedience?
Schloss and Murray (S&M) have provided an insightful and important contribution to our understanding of the role of supernatural punishment in the evolution of religious systems. Future researchers will need to pay particular attention to their refinements of the cooperation enhancement (CE) and punishment avoidance (PA) approaches. While S&M acknowledge ‘‘considerable empirical support that . ...

متن کاملPunishment does not promote cooperation under exploration dynamics when anti-social punishment is possible.
It has been argued that punishment promotes the evolution of cooperation when mutation rates are high (i.e. when agents engage in 'exploration dynamics'). Mutations maintain a steady supply of agents that punish free-riders, and thus free-riders are at a disadvantage. Recent experiments, however, have demonstrated that free-riders sometimes also pay to punish cooperators. Inspired by these empi...
